Re: [sumo] Sumo World Championships Day Two

Don't think I can add anything to Howard's brilliant description of the Sumo World Championships. He has far better recall of the details than I.

Just a comment on women's participation though.

Jeanne Hedge asked:

Out of curiousity, given the NSK's stance and "polling results" related to women on the doyho, what sort of "feel" did you get from the Japanese delegation about women participating in sumo in general (especially since they sent a women's team to the event).

Women participate in sumo as a result of the IFS (International Sumo Federation) wanting to have sumo made an Olympic sport. New olympic sports cannot be for one sex only. This has nothing to do with the NSK (Nihon Sumo Kyokai). Women can do sumo in the amateur world because the dohyo is not purified as the professional ones are.
